The Paper Store: Paolo Tamburella bring Venice to Docklands Warehouse
The Paper Store is a solo project by Italian artist Paolo Tamburella and curated by Aoife Tunney.
Opens: Thursday 24th June 2010, from 7pm to 10pm. The Paper store, Upper Sheriff Street, Dublin 1. [Directly behind 02 building Dublin docklands].

Paolo Tamburella's projects to date have been diverse and realized for the Singapore Biennale, the Istanbul Biennale, working from places like New Orleans, India, New York and Rome. At the core of his work is a profound consideration for the social and cultural aspects of the places and people he engages with. For the 2009 Venice Biennale, Paolo Tamburella represented The Comoros Islands and docked his installation in the water at the main entrance to the Biennale. Entitled Djahazi, this project explored the traditional trade of the Comorian Dockers. The Paper Store is an exhibition of new work by Tamburella and illustrates his response to his first ever visit to Ireland.
The site for this work is a warehouse on Upper Sheriff Street, Dublin. Functioning in the early 1900s, it was used to store paper for a prominent Irish newspaper. Now abandoned, this empty space exists in a once thriving industrial hub. Factories in this area manufactured soap, candles, grain, paper, timber and coal making this part of the city integral to the beginnings of capitalism in Ireland. Although the port remains a busy place many of the factories have closed down or moved out of the area. Tamburella has immersed himself in this area of the docklands, and has used the warehouse as a vestibule in which to convey his findings using materials from the area.
A conversation with the artist and curator will be held at the Temple Bar Galleries and studios on 25th June at 6pm. For bookings please contact Rayne Booth: rayne@templebargallery.com
