Docklands Cultural Forum in association with TradFest 2017 is proud to present ShantFest an evening of rousing maritime music featuring the unique trad singing voice of George Murphy, all-female shanty stars from Rosses Point, 8 Bells and introducing Dublin’s newest and youngest shanty band MudLark.
Shanty music embraces a range of traditions and cultures which emanated from a life at sea. The physical labour of bygone days when all hands on deck and below deck were constantly in motion and governed by the demands of sailing and the moods of the sea. The call and response to the “Shantyman” characterized the spirit of sailors working in unison and relieved the monotony of constant routine. However it also has its tender side expressed in the songs of longing, loss and  loneliness.
The changes in Dublin Docklands have almost wiped out the seaport working culture and ShantFest is an attempt to recall and acknowledge the generations of ship workers and dockers upon whose backs the strains and manifestations of progress were constructed.
